Sky People adopted the English-version of the Grounder term and call those with black blood "Nightbloods". Only Nightbloods can become Commanders as they are the only ones compatible with the Flame. Grounders call people with black blood " Natblida", which is Trigedasleng for "Nightblood". Nightblood is important in both Grounder and Sanctum culture and the few who inherit the trait are treated as special or royals. However, the genetic enhancement is recessive, causing it often to skip generations. The serum genetically altered the subject, making the gene therapy hereditary. The serum was successful but had an additional consequence of making the subject's blood become black. Becca Franko created the Nightblood serum for the Eligius Corporation to increase people's resistance to radiation. Nightblood did not occur naturally but rather is a result of genetic engineering. Nightblood, originally called Black Blood, is a genetic trait that makes people resistant to radiation and is expressed through black blood. The blood of the first Commander Bekka Pramheda is your blood. We are moving away from our traditional reliance on deterrent and reactive approaches and toward more preventive and proactive approaches. The democratic world is experiencing a fundamental shift in its approach to controlling harmful conduct. He ought to have to sign a torture warrant in which he says, 'I'm taking responsibility for breaking the law, for violating treaties, for doing an extraordinary act of necessity.' That's a responsibility only the president should be able to take, and only in the most extraordinary situation." "If the president of the United States thinks it's absolutely essential to defend the lives of thousands of people, he ought to be on the line. "That's exactly what has to be debated," he says. What types of torture should be permitted? That would create "visibility and accountability. "The problem is that today, torture is being used promiscuously, and we deny we're using it."ĭershowitz says the government should acknowledge that it tortures suspects, and create rules for how torture is carried out. "I think torture will be used - and has, in fact, been used - whenever it is felt that by torturing an obviously guilty, the lives of multiple innocent people could be saved," he says. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Blindness book jose saramagoOne of the doctor’s patients, a young woman wearing dark glasses for an eye infection, works as a prostitute and goes blind while having sex with a man at a hotel. The only option, the doctor admits, is to “wait and see.”Īfter the blind man’s appointment, the car-thief also suddenly goes blind, as does the doctor later that night. The doctor is baffled: there’s seemingly nothing wrong with the blind man’s eyes, and his condition is unprecedented. It turns out that the person who drove the blind man home was a thief-he stole their car, so the blind man and his wife take a taxi to the eye doctor. After another driver helps the blind man back to his apartment, the blind man knocks over a vase and cuts himself trying to pick up the pieces, then passes out on the couch until the blind man’s wife comes home and helps him clean up. The man yells out that he has suddenly gone blind: his entire field of vision is a sea of whiteness. At an intersection in front of a traffic light, a driver remains stopped after the light turns green, which annoys the other drivers. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Prozac nation coverWhen they don't succumb to her outbursts, her eruptions only intensify. Or if you want to see what kid's books were like once upon a time. But he doesn't show up until the end of the book.I would recommend this if you like adventure type stories and if you don't mind loosely plotted book. I was glad to be at the part with Richard of Gloucester, the Crookback, who became King Richard III. But there are plenty of sword fights, being captured and then daring escapes, a guy disguised as a leper, and lots more. Don't look for a lot of plot continuity in here. But there's a romance too, and plenty of fight scenes thrown in for no apparent reason whenever the story slows down. Then he finds out that a band of outlaws has targeted his benefactor and others as being responsible for the deaths of many people, including Dick's father. So who can Dick trust? Practically no one, it seems. (My 15 year old had never heard of the War of the Roses, so I'm offering a little explanation here.) Dick Shelton is an orphan who is being fostered by a tough warrior type. This is a rowdy boy's adventure story set during the Wars of the Roses between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians in England. |
